Micron Technology just announced some exciting news—they’re now shipping early samples of the world’s first 1γ (1-gamma) node-based LPDDR5X memory! Designed to boost AI apps on flagship smartphones, this new memory hits an impressive speed of 10.7 gigabits per second (Gbps) and cuts power use by up to 20%. That means faster, smoother experiences on your phone—think AI translation or image creation—plus longer battery life, even with heavy tasks.
To keep up with the demand for sleek smartphone designs, Micron’s team has made this LPDDR5X super compact. At just 0.61 millimeters thick, it’s 6% thinner than competitors and 14% slimmer than the last generation. This tiny size opens up new possibilities for manufacturers, letting them create ultrathin or foldable phones with ease.
“Micron’s 1γ-based LPDDR5X is a big win for the mobile world,” said Mark Montierth, corporate vice president and general manager of Micron’s Mobile and Client Business Unit. “This tech brings super-fast speeds and great power savings in the thinnest package yet, setting the stage for some amazing smartphone designs. It shows our dedication to helping the industry deliver top-notch mobile experiences.”

This new memory takes mobile performance to the next level with quicker AI responses. Micron tested it with the Llama 2 language model and found some impressive results: location-based restaurant suggestions are 30% faster, translating an English voice query to Spanish text for directions jumps to over 50% faster, and car purchase recommendations based on type, price, and features can be up to 25% quicker—thanks to that 10.7 Gbps speed compared to the older 7.5 Gbps.
Micron’s 1γ-based LPDDR5X is the first mobile memory to use advanced EUV lithography, giving partners early access to the latest performance and efficiency boosts. This follows their February sampling of 1γ-based DDR5 for data centers and client CPUs. The improved 1γ DRAM node uses next-gen tech for better transistor performance and EUV lithography for higher data density.
As more AI tasks happen right on your device instead of just in the cloud, low-power chips are a must for phones, tablets, and laptops. The 20% power savings in Micron’s 1γ-based LPDDR5X means you can enjoy AI apps, games, and videos longer on a single charge. Plus, with AI driving the need for efficient power and performance, data centers, smart cars, and AI PCs might start using this memory too.
Right now, Micron is sending 16 GB samples to select partners, with plans to offer capacities from 8 GB to 32 GB for 2026 flagship phones.
What do you think about this new memory tech for your phone? I’d love to hear your thoughts!
