CD PROJEKT RED just shared some exciting news—Cyberpunk 2, once called “Project Orion,” has officially entered pre-production! After weeks of early planning, the team is now diving into the nitty-gritty, working on story outlines, designing environments, and setting up technical details before full production starts. One of the big goals for Cyberpunk 2 is to take players beyond Night City. Series creator Mike Pondsmith revealed that a second city, inspired by a gritty, dystopian version of Chicago, will be added. This new urban setting aims to feel heavy and worn-out but still packed with intricate details. By including another major city, the team wants to make the game feel even bigger and bring in fresh social dynamics that differ from Night City’s bright, neon vibe.
When it comes to gameplay, Cyberpunk 2 is set to focus heavily on cybernetic upgrades. Pulling ideas from the original pen-and-paper role-playing game, the developers are adding body modifications that didn’t make it into Cyberpunk 2077. Players can expect a wider range of implants—like neural interfaces and advanced prosthetics—which will give more options for customizing characters. Whether you prefer sneaking around or going full-on into combat, these upgrades should let you shape your playstyle in new ways.
While this all sounds thrilling, don’t get too excited just yet—a release is still a long way off. Right now, only 96 developers are working on Cyberpunk 2, as most of CD PROJEKT RED’s team is focused on The Witcher 4, which is already in full swing. A realistic release for Cyberpunk 2 might not happen until around 2030.
What do you think about the new direction for Cyberpunk 2? I’d love to hear your thoughts!
