If you’re a fan of Keanu Reeves, you’ll be excited to hear that a sequel to his popular movie Constantine has been in development for a while. However, a recent update from a co-star suggests Reeves isn’t fully on board with the scripts so far, which could affect how the project moves forward.
In a recent interview with The Direct, Peter Stormare, who played Lucifer in the 2005 original and is returning for the sequel, shared some insight. “There’s been a lot of back-and-forth because I think Keanu isn’t too happy with the scripts,” Stormare said. The first Constantine didn’t take off right away but grew into a beloved cult classic—and now one of the biggest of its kind. Studios, however, want to spice up the sequel with over-the-top action, like cars flying and flashy fight scenes, which doesn’t sit well with Reeves.
Stormare, who’s set to reprise his role, explained that Reeves wants to keep the sequel’s focus intact. “I think Keanu says, ‘I’ve done John Wick. This movie is spiritual—it’s about demons and everyday people. I want to stick with that,’” he noted. They’ve even discussed ideas, like bringing back a God figure in a style similar to Lucifer from the first film, though Stormare admits being 12 years older makes matching the original tricky. Still, Reeves is pushing for a sequel that stays true to the original’s vibe.
It seems Reeves is also worried that Warner Bros. might turn Constantine 2 into a big, Marvel-style blockbuster. This makes sense, given that Constantine is loosely based on the DC and Vertigo comic Hellblazer, and everyone loves a hit comic book movie—especially since Reeves recently met with DC Studios about it. But he feels the film doesn’t need that kind of over-the-top treatment. Stormare agrees, saying, “It took time for the first one to become a cult hit, and it worked. It’ll work again without adding tons of action or shootouts. We have other movies for that. Let’s not turn it into us flying around in harnesses and blasting each other. Keep it simple.”
Director Francis Lawrence is returning to helm the sequel, but there’s no word yet on when filming will start or when we can expect it in theaters. For now, fans are hopeful Reeves’ vision will shape the project in a way that honors the original’s unique charm.
