Even though Murderbot is brand new, the excitement for future seasons is already sky-high! We’re still a couple of weeks away from its premiere, but creators Chris and Paul Weitz are already optimistic about what’s next. The show is based on Martha Wells’ The Murderbot Diaries, a mix of novellas and novels, and it seems the first season will only cover the initial novella. That leaves plenty of material to keep the story going for years. In a recent io9 interview, the Weitz brothers shared their eagerness to explore more of SecUnit’s adventures on the Corporate Rim, though it all depends on how fans respond to Season 1, which drops on Apple TV+ on May 16.
The Murderbot Diaries kicked off with four novellas between 2017 and 2018, followed by a novel, another novella, and the latest book in 2023. Season 1 will focus on the first novella, All Systems Red, but Paul Weitz told io9, “We’d love to adapt more of the series. We’d definitely check with Martha to make sure she’s on board with our ideas. We’re excited that Season 1 has a solid ending, but it also sets the stage for Murderbot’s journey to grow.”
Chris added, “If people enjoy the first season, we’d love to bring Murderbot back together with the characters it meets. That’s something we’d really want to explore for a second season.” This hint at more seasons has fans buzzing online, with many favorite characters and sci-fi twists not showing up until later novellas. Social media is alive with fans debating their dream casts for future stories they hope to see. Plus, people are loving how the Weitz brothers are respecting Wells and working closely with her.
That said, All Systems Red is a great way to kick things off. Season 1 will introduce SecUnit and its life in a harsh future where humans have spread across space, living on planets, moons, and stations. Power is mostly in the hands of big corporations, and both people and artificial beings like SecUnit are under their control.
Murderbot arrives on Apple TV+ on Friday, May 16. There’s no official word on a renewal yet, but Wells’ Murderbot Diaries books are available now in print, digital, and audiobook formats. Are you excited for this series? I’d love to hear what you think!
