Apple is once again making changes to comply with European Union rules. The company is developing a universal copy-and-paste system that will let users transfer text and other content directly from an iPhone to a Windows PC.
Under the EU’s Digital Markets Act (DMA), Apple must improve interoperability. Microsoft formally requested this feature, and Apple reviewed the request in March 2026, submitted project plans by late June, and has now moved into active development.
How It Will Work
Right now, third-party apps on iOS can only access the clipboard while they are open and actively on screen. Every copy or paste action still needs the user’s manual approval.
The new system will use Apple’s AccessorySetupKit framework. Once a user grants permission for a specific Windows PC, clipboard items will transfer automatically in the background without further prompts. This is similar to Apple’s existing Universal Clipboard that already works between iPhones and Macs, and it brings iPhone users closer to the seamless experience Android users have long had with Microsoft’s Phone Link app.
Timeline
Apple has described the project as a major engineering effort. The company does not expect the work to be finished before fall 2027. A developer beta is planned for late 2027, which means ordinary users may not see the feature until early 2028.
This is another example of the EU pushing Apple toward greater compatibility, following earlier requirements such as the switch to USB-C on iPhones.
