Sony Interactive Entertainment has announced a major shift in how games will be distributed on PlayStation consoles. Starting January 2028, physical disc production will end for all new games releasing on PlayStation platforms. From that point forward, new titles will only be available digitally through the PlayStation Store and retailers offering digital codes.
This change does not affect games that have already been released or are scheduled to launch in physical format before January 2028. Those titles will continue to be available on disc as planned.
Sony described the move as a natural response to changing consumer habits, noting that the vast majority of players now prefer digital downloads. The company emphasized that it will continue focusing on innovation and giving players choices in how they purchase and access games.
“This transition will enable us to align more closely with how most of our community prefers to access and play games today,” the company stated.

Sony reassured fans that it remains committed to delivering excellent gaming experiences and thanked players for their ongoing support.
