Game studios are increasingly using generative AI and machine learning to make games more engaging, and Ubisoft is the latest to jump in. They’ve shown off an experimental AI system called Ubisoft Teammates that creates dynamic, helpful AI companions for shooters and co-op games—all controlled by voice.
This project uses AI for natural language and voice recognition to enhance gameplay. You can tell your teammate to mark enemies, adjust settings without menus, share story details, or even pause the game. The AI picks up on context from your surroundings, making interactions feel smart and natural. Testing showed it was especially useful for players who got lost or weren’t sure what to do next.
Ubisoft also created two voice-trained NPCs, Pablo and Sofia, who act semi-autonomously based on your commands and the environment. They respond to voice and adapt on the fly, adding real teamwork to the mix.

Xavier Manzanares, Ubisoft’s Director of Gameplay GenAI, explained that the voice assistant proved super helpful for players needing guidance. Ubisoft plans to roll out these or similar AI features in future titles, potentially shaking up big franchises like Assassin’s Creed or Star Wars.
The project has been in a closed beta with a few hundred players, and testing continues as the AI improves. It’s an exciting step toward more immersive, voice-driven companions that could change how we play co-op games.
What do you think about AI teammates in games? I’d love to hear your thoughts!
