Microsoft has quietly shifted gears, setting aside plans for a separate “Windows 12” and instead bringing us the next big feature update as Windows 11 version 25H2 later this year. On Friday, they confirmed that the latest Insider Preview build is out for testers, with a wider release planned for the second half of 2025. Technically, 25H2 builds on the same foundation and update system as the current 24H2 version. This means devices already on 24H2 can grab a small enablement package and restart—no big reinstall needed, and it’ll feel just like a regular monthly update. Right now, the 25H2 preview has the same features we saw in the 24H2 Beta Channel.
Microsoft shared that the upcoming upgrades are already tucked into the 24H2 branch, just waiting to be turned on. As each feature is ready, it’ll be added to the monthly updates for 24H2 and activated with that enablement package—similar to what they did with Windows 10 version 1909. With Windows 10 support ending in October 2025, launching 25H2 around September or October could nudge any lingering Windows 10 users to switch. Businesses and schools will get a fresh 36-month support period, while consumer versions will have 24 months of updates. Microsoft hasn’t locked in an exact release date yet, but Windows Insiders can start testing 25H2 today and share their thoughts. When it’s widely available, a quick restart will bring Windows 11 version 25H2 to life!
What do you think about this update plan? I’d love to hear your thoughts!
