The HDMI Forum, Inc. just dropped some exciting news with the release of Version 2.2 of the HDMI Specification! This update brings a whopping 96 Gbps bandwidth and new HDMI Fixed Rate Link tech, delivering top-notch audio and video for all kinds of devices. Users can feel confident their displays will handle native video formats smoothly and reliably. It supports higher resolutions and refresh rates, like up to 12K at 120 Hz or 16K at 60 Hz, plus more high-quality options such as uncompressed full chroma formats like 8K at 60 Hz/4:4:4 and 4K at 240 Hz/4:4:4 in 10-bit and 12-bit color.

“The HDMI Forum is thrilled to launch the HDMI 2.2 Specification, opening the door to higher performance and cool new features for exciting products,” said Chandlee Harrell, president of the HDMI Forum. “Plus, the new Ultra96 label will help consumers easily spot products that support the max bandwidth.”
“Ultra96” is a handy term manufacturers can use to show a product handles 64 Gbps, 80 Gbps, or 96 Gbps bandwidth, following the HDMI 2.2 rules. To make the most of this, you’ll need an Ultra96 HDMI Cable, which supports up to 96 Gbps and works with all HDMI 2.2 features. The current Ultra High Speed HDMI Cable is fine for setups up to 48 Gbps. Both cable types are part of the HDMI Cable Certification Program, meaning each length is tested and certified with a special label.
The new spec also adds a Latency Indication Protocol (LIP) to improve audio-video sync, especially in setups with multiple devices like an AV receiver or soundbar.
What do you think about this HDMI upgrade? I’d love to hear your thoughts!
