Sony just shared some exciting news—the PlayStation 5 Pro will get the full version of AMD’s FidelityFX Super Resolution 4 (FSR 4) upscaling tech in 2026! This upgrade brings the same engine PC users have enjoyed since March, replacing the current PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) system without losing any features. It’s a team effort between Sony and AMD, kicked off with the PS5 Pro’s late 2024 launch under Project Amethyst. In a recent chat, PlayStation lead system architect Mark Cerny confirmed the jointly crafted algorithm will work on the console just as it does on PCs, offering PS5 Pro owners the complete FSR 4 experience with no cutbacks.

AMD introduced Sony to its thorough quality-check process and helped set up a dedicated team to focus on upscaling performance. Both companies say this teamwork sped things up, hitting big milestones in less than nine months. Sony plans to roll out the FSR 4 upgrade as a free system update for all PS5 Pro users. Meanwhile, AMD will use insights from Project Amethyst to improve its next RDNA 5/UDNA graphics architecture. Since neither company put limits on the shared research, third-party developers and hardware partners can jump on these advancements too. For PS5 Pro owners, this means clearer images without sacrificing speed, and for future RDNA 5/UDNA GPUs, upscaling will be even more polished thanks to the work already done for the console.
What do you think about this upcoming upgrade? I’d love to hear your thoughts!
